Friday Ignite 2 – Goal Striving Paradox

How many times have you set a goal and failed to reach it?

Personally, I have lost count.

Sometimes it was because my goals were too aggressive. Other times I lost interest in the goal. And then another portion of the time, I was pretty much sabotaging my achievement of the goal.

The following video explains why.

Please leave me your comments and let me know what you think :)

    GREAT video and AWESOME point!

When you appear desperate people can smell it on you. When you genuinely don’t care about an outcome good things seem o happen automatically.

I was talking to a relative recently who was interviewing for jobs. He already had a good job so interviewing for another was a relaxed exercise for him. Rather than appearing needy, he turned the interviews around and started asking the interviewer questions about the company, culture, job etc.

What happened? Multiple offers from the companies he visited.

When I am selling someone if I sense hesitation, rather than pouring on the pressure I back off and say “hey if this isn’t for you no worries. Why don’t you take some time to think it over and get back to me when you are ready”.

About half of the people will buy on the spot, the other half may take some time or never respond. I am truly happy with any outcome which puts everyone at ease.

I love what you said about setting goals from a place of happiness today!
    Great job

      Hey Brad

Awesome response. That’s a really cool story about the guy who was applying for jobs. It TOTALLY works… in pretty much all areas of life..

Glad you liked the vid :)

Excellent video Justin. It certainly does give another view point to goal setting. I know it is possible to be so fixed on desires and goals that you miss the really important stuff around you.
These days I try to make sure I get up into the mountains on a regular basis. Breath the air, take some wildlife photography and forget about pressure of having to achieve.

Another thing is to make sure plans are flexible, because everything evolves. Plans that are too rigid cannot develop to their full potential.

Look forward to the next video.

Thanks Andy. Great story and I know you are definitely one of the few who truly takes time regularly to enjoy “the process”. I think it is great and you still achieve your goals as well !

Justin… That is a new idea to me… but I can see the value, it’s a thin line to tread through, if you appear to relaxed about the goal/business, will they go to someone who appears keener?

      Hey Sean

      Thanks for stopping by.

It definitely is a thin line but I’m definitely not saying you shouldn’t be keen to reach your goals. In fact, I’m obsessed with my goals. But I try not to let my current moments be wasted by getting frustrated that I haven’t achieved yet. Instead, I celebrate my current achievements and everything else that’s positive and it keeps me in that zone I need to be to achieve even bigger things

    sincerely zahra

    • Justin Popovic October 17, 2011 at 9:45 am #

      Hey Zahra,

It doesn’t matter if I think you have hope for this exam.

It only matters what you think and believe. Do you believe a busy agenda can hold you back from giving you 100% best effort to this exam?

If not… then you give your best effort. If you do well GREAT. If not, there is nothing to worry about because you gave your all. If you live your life like this, you will be successful.

Thanks Justin! That is just what I needed today. Some motivation, but also a new perspective about detachment from your goals.

    • Justin Popovic October 19, 2011 at 6:32 pm #

      Hey Lana

Awesome glad you liked it. I really have been working hard on the idea of detachment. I am staying driven and motivated but I am not letting my current moments be ruined by anger or frustration if I have not achieved my goals yet.

Smart thoughts Justin. I’m with the ethic that we can be too goal hungry and thus over fixated with a specific aim or final target. I prefer overall intentions that I move towards but are happy to be flexible and responsive to how I get there. Sometimes life and people may know better or more or help refine and define the ultimate destination. I don’t know best but I can be ready to welcome assistance of the best. It’s like shining a diamond.

Your comments are spot on and I like your philosophy. It allows for more variety and maybe even a better outcome that you had planned because you are willing to adapt

Being a long time student of personal development I have heard this important message before.
Funny how quite often we tend to not take stock of our achievements or the good things that are happening in our lives.
I guess I am guilty of focussing on more on whats not working rather than the good stuff that I should be thankful for. Thanks for a timely reminder about being careful on what we focus on.
Also the importance of enjoying the journey.

      Hey Stan

You are not alone in this. I have done this over and over again and it still happens, although much less frequently. Enjoy the journey is a great way of thinking of it :)

    Justin,

This post rings true on so many levels….

Example: During my last year in university, I really didn’t care or worry about [was detached from] my exam marks. I still studied but the “detached” approach defiantly made the last year more stress free and successful.

Simple, to the point and insightful… Keep it up!

My mum always taught me this – the more you try to get something the more it slips away from you and simply letting go and being happy with where you are now seems to bring things to you. Thanks for the helpful video and information Justin

I can’t even tell how many times I have set goals but I did not manage to reach them. I have lost count too. But what keeps me strong every time is that I am able to get back up, figure out another way or just start over on the goals that I had set, and trust me in the end I am never disappointed.
